Does Scream 6 Have an Post-Credits Scene? End Credits Scene Explained

The following story contains light spoilers for Scream VI.

The hallmark of the Scream movies has always been the inclusion of meta-commentary on the horror genre (and, at times, movies at large) that reflects the era in which the given installment of the series was released. And while not exclusive to horror movies, is there anything that can feel more like a given in this day and age to a blockbuster audience than a post-credits scene?

A sold out crowd for a show during any Marvel movie’s opening night knows not to move a muscle until the end of the credits, out of fear of potentially missing the next great character introduction or major reveal. Hell, even the failed Kingsman prequel The King’s Man included an extremely bizarre post-credits scene that teased the introduction of Adolf Hitler (not a typo) as the villain for that movie’s (unlikely to be made) sequel.

The meta-commentary of Scream VI features Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) making a bold claim: they’re in a franchise. It’s kind of unclear why they’re making that distinction now, in the series’ sixth installment (what else was it before?), but that’s beside the point. Because what else do franchise installments do, really, aside from set up future installments in credits scenes?

The end of Scream VI leaves the self-proclaimed “core four” (characters played by Brown, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and Mason Gooding) all alive, along with Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers and Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed; Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott didn’t appear in Scream VI, but is alive and kicking off screen. And, of course, there’s always the nest person to put on that Ghostface killer mask.

There’s a lot to set up in a credits scene. Does Scream VI do it?

There are plenty of open threads in the Scream franchise: Will Sam follow in her father’s footsteps? Is Stu Macher alive? Will Sidney ever come back? And, thus, plenty of things that could’ve been teased for a potential Scream VII in the movie’s credits scene.

But directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett opted against it! All that comes at the end of the credits is a quick moment from one of Mindy’s meta-movie speeches: “Not every movie needs a post-credits scene!” She got us.

It’s reminiscent of the Deadpool credits scene, where the titular character talks to the camera and, in essence, says “You’re still here? It’s over! Go home!” (before then revealing that Cable, eventually played by Josh Brolin, would appear in the movie’s sequel). There’s also the Spider-Man: Homecoming credits scene that just consists of a Captain America PSA, essentially trolling fans for waiting so long for something that, ultimately, wasn’t rewarded.
