Matthew McConaughey Yellowstone Spin-off News, Plot, Cast, Premiere Date

FOR WEEKS, RUMORS have circulated that Matthew McConaughey was poised to enter the Yellowstone universe, and now at last we have official confirmation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Media Networks head Chris McCarthy confirmed that McConaughey is indeed lined up for a spin-off, though he kept mum on most additional details.

One thing he did reveal, though? That the spin-off will be moving forward, regardless of whether Kevin Costner returns as Yellowstone‘s patriarch John Dutton for the remainder of the show’s fifth season.

Originally, when speculation of McConaughey’s involvement in the Yellowstone-verse started, it was suggested that he could be coming onto the flagship show as a replacement for Costner, who, rumor has it, has been unsatisfied with the show’s shooting schedule.

“We have no news to report,” Paramount originally stated in February when the news first surfaced. “Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

And partner they will—though not, it appears, in quite the way fans expected. Thus far, no other news has been released about the setting or other details of the new McConaughey-helmed shows.

In the meantime, fans are still anxiously awaiting news as to whether Costner will, in fact, be exiting the series this year. On that front, McCarthy’s only response was that Yellowstone, “wouldn’t be what it is today without Kevin and we hope that that stays for a long time to come.”
