Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe: Workout, Diet

ROB LOWE AND his son John Owen do just about everything together: eating; golfing; training; starring in the new Netflix comedy series Unstable; and, of course, gracing the cover of the April issue of Men’s Health.

We took a trip to the Lowe family residence to see what’s new with the men of the houseand naturally, assess the contents of their gym and fridge.

When the father and son aren’t filming together, they’re eating together: everything from tart cherry juice to Atkins protein shakes “makes the railroad run on time,” Rob says in the new video.

Kombucha is a snack mainstay, and bacon is always on deck. The two differentiate on some things though, including milk: oat for John Owen, and dairy milk for Rob. The one thing you won’t find in the Lowe home? Alcohol. After a bout with alcoholism in his late 20s, Rob has been sober for nearly 30 years. John Owen is sober, too; he’s been off the drink for 5 years. Rob does, however, create killer mocktails. His most recent invention consists of grape juice, sparkling water, and a dash of lime.

John Owen says he learned about healthy eating from his dad. “I feel like he’s been serious about his health since I can remember, so he helped me be serious about mine,” he says.

When it comes to workouts, the father-son duo enjoy breaking a sweat outside whenever possible. Rob took up surfing later in life than most of his fellow Malibu natives. Good thing, though: “I would’ve blown off every audition if the waves were good,” Rob says.

John Owen joins him in the surf sometimes. They’re also avid golfers; the two boasted about their dream-come-true venture of playing a round on the legendary greens of Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia (home of the PGA Master’s Tournament) this past year.

The Lowes give a whole new meaning to the phrase “no days off.” When the two aren’t catching a wave or chipping away on the green, they’re working out in the backyard. Armed with a jumprope, dumbbells, and medicine balls, the pair get a sweat on basically every day in the California sun.

“For my mood, I’ve got to do it. I’ve got to get my body moving, get a sweat on,” Rob says. “I have to really work to take a day off actually.”

The two feed off each other’s energy, in work and in life.
