How Do I Know if a Cologne Will Last a Long Time?
The fragrance world has categories – Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Parfum—that let you know how concentrated the actual scent is within the formula. Eau de Parfum and Parfum are the highest concentration, which means they will last the longest on your skin. If you’re looking for a long lasting fragrance, look for “parfum” on the label. If you don’t see it, look for other words like “intense” which describe the same idea.
What Notes Last the Longest?
Usually wood notes, including oud, and gourmand notes like vanilla will last the longest on your skin, which is why they are typically used in base notes of fragrances.
What Are Top, Heart and Base Notes?
Traditionally, fragrance notes are arranged in a fragrance pyramid—top notes at the top, heart notes in the middle, and base notes at the bottom. Top notes are what you smell immediately when you spray a fragrance (these are usually fresh notes like citrus). Heart notes are what you smell after a few minutes and base notes are what you smell after an hour or so once the scent has “dried down” on your skin. Base notes stay around the longest.
How Long Does a Fragrance Usually Last?
You can expect most quality fragrances to last anywhere from four to eight hours, though some long lasting colognes can last even longer. Conversely, lower quality or inexpensive fragrances can last a shorter period as many don’t contain base notes.
How Can I Make a Fragrance Last Longer?
How long a fragrance lasts depends on plenty of factors—not just how it is designed and how concentrated it is. It also reacts to the unique body chemistry of your skin, so to help a fragrance last longer, always spray it onto clean and moisturized skin to help it stick better. Apply it to your pulse points (like your wrists and neck) which are warm and help to release the fragrance into the air. Some people also say to not rub it in, which can cause the top notes to fade more quickly (we aren’t exactly sold on this as a hard and fast rule, but it can be worth a try). If you really want to up and ante, use a body lotion or deodorant that has the same scent (this is where fragrance gift sets come in handy).
