Romantic comedies are best when they convince you for about 90 minutes (or, hey, maybe sometimes a little longer), the very famous celebrities are actually the jaded singles they’re portraying, and it’s time for them to fall hopelessly in love. Even better is when they really know how to sell the chemistry between the lead characters. What makes the genre as fun as it is–even when we can predict the plot–is feeling like falling in love is easy, even just for a little while.
Plus, since we’ve been dealing with a deadly pandemic for the past two years, rom-coms are exactly the positive force we need to help up get through hard times. We may have seen the city girl travel back to her rural hometown, or two best friends pretending to be in a relationship, or any of the other romantic tropes a million times, but it’s still fun to watch the whole thing unfold. In fact, it’s basically a part of the genre at this point to know exactly what’s going to happen, but somehow it can still bring tears to your eyes. (Also see our list of romantic comedies that are actually funny.)
