From books to streaming shows and network TV, true crime is all the rage; nothing seems to fuel people’s adrenaline quite like the twists and turns of a classic whodunit, set IRL. And thanks to the massive popularity that was the first season of Serial, the genre has also found another home: podcasts. There are dozens, if not, hundreds of them telling the dark, twisted or otherwise creepy stories of crimes taking place across the world. And the magic of a true crime podcast is that everything is imagined. There are no actors or sets. The crime takes place in your head, and sometimes, that’s the scariest place to be.
And with new shows like The Dropout (which initially started out as an ABC podcast), or The Girl From Plainview, there’s unprecedented interest in true crime right now. Who knows what podcasts or viral articles could one day become another breakout streaming hit like Inventing Anna. Plus before these podcasts get high-budget television adaptations, they’re often able to interview people who were actually involved in various crimes (or who brought the criminals to justice). Think of it like watching a gripping documentary, but for your ears. Not to knock a good television series, but there’s little details a good true crime podcast can garner that a limited series can’t.
If you aren’t scared off yet, sit back and grab a pair of headphones. These true crime podcasts will get your feet wet in the genre and take you on the thrill ride you’re looking for… or maybe just a series of chills.
