When it comes to gym partners who’ll keep you motivated during a training session, you can do a lot worse than the Incredible Hulk himself.
In a new video on his Instagram, Joe Manganiello shared a look at his chest day workout with the legendary bodybuilder and actor Lou Ferrigno, who coaches him through a grueling set of cable chest flys.
Known for his frequently shirtless roles in Magic Mike and True Blood, chest day is a can’t-miss for Manganiello—and the cable fly is a great choice of exercise for when you’ve build size in your chest and want to start sculpting out some definition in the middle, and it can serve as the perfect chest day finisher so you leave your workout with a massive pump.
In the video, Ferrigno is using his fist to signal where Manganiello should be reaching for at the farthest end of the movement, ensuring he pushes as hard as possible on each and every repetition. And he’s also varying the height, which is smart: adjusting the angles in a cable fly will help to target different chest fibers.
“I usually train six days a week—a hybrid of bodybuilding and CrossFit,” Manganiello previously told Men’s Health. “The thing with me is I’m naturally skinny. I’ll lose weight if I don’t work out. I deflate. My wife jokes and says that I’m full of air because if I don’t work out for a while I’ll thin out and then a week back in the gym and I’ll blow back up. She’s like, ‘There must be a bike pump in the basement.'”
In addition to the kind of practical workout coaching he can be seen providing in the video, Ferrigno has a couple of essential rules that he lives by in order to stay in great shape in his seventies. “There’s three great secrets,” he said in 2022. “Eat good, sleep good, and train good. And remember one thing: health is your greatest wealth. Don’t forget that.”
