There is, of course, no one best running hat to rule all running hats. As with all fitness apparel, it’s about what’s right for you. But in our expert humble opinion, these are the most important things worth considering when shopping for your own:
Breathability
Breathability is the single most important factor when choosing the right running hat. If a cap isn’t well-ventilated, you’re more likely to overheat, to sweat more, and, in the worst-case scenario, be just plain miserable on your runs. This is especially true during the summer months or in hotter climates. The solution is to find a hat with lightweight materials and proper ventilation, usually in the form of mesh side panels. Lighter colors can also help reflect (rather than absorb) the sun’s rays. Some caps like the Nathan above are purpose-built for running in hot weather.
Fit & Sizing
Finding the right hat size is arguably just as important as proper ventilation. The best running brands post sizing charts on their websites. We recommend taking a minute to measure your head to find the size that’s right for you. Most running hats these days are “one size fits all” or at least “one size fits most” with adjustable straps or bands to dial in your perfect fit. You want it snug enough to stay with you on your hardest runs, but not so tight that you can hear your own pulse pounding in your ears. It’s a delicate balance.
Reflectivity
One major difference between today’s running hats and most traditional baseball caps is built-in reflectivity. The best models feature high-contrast reflective striping on the front, back, or all the way around. This ensures maximum visibility for drivers when you’re running in low-light conditions, especially in high-traffic areas.
Flexibility
Many running hats are made with a more freeform design than old-school baseball caps. This provides more flexibility to fit heads of all sizes and shapes. Some are flexible enough to pack down extremely small or even completely flat, making them more versatile and perfect for travel.
Price
Fortunately, running hats—even the best running hats—aren’t expensive. You can score flagship caps from many of the most recognizable brands in the business for under $50 and know that they’ll last for many years to come.
