Tom Holland has joked before that there are sometimes aspects of getting fit for film roles that he struggles with, from the time he got absolutely beasted while racing his Spider-Man: Far From Home co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, to the EMS muscle stimulation he underwent for No Way Home, which he described as like doing yoga while being electrocuted.
But it seems like the actor completely misunderstood the assignment while training with Mark Wahlberg for the new Uncharted movie, after his co-star gave him a massage gun to aid in his post-workout recovery… only for Holland to mistake it for a sex toy.
“Mark Wahlberg was kind enough to give me a massage gun after I left his house in L.A. and he drove me back to my hotel,” Holland said in a recent virtual interview with Access Hollywood, adding: “I was confused as to what kind of massage gun this was, having never seen one before, and I thought it was the type of self-pleasure.”
“I thought Mark Wahlberg was driving me back to my house for other reasons other than just being a gentleman,” he continued. “I didn’t know you — it’s Hollywood, baby. Who knows what’s gonna happen?”
Wahlberg, who was also present at the interview, joked that he had merely been trying to teach the actor about fitness. “I can’t believe, the whole time, you were thinking that,” he said. “Gotta get your head outta the gutter, buddy.” He later gave a demonstration of the massage gun in question in a video on Instagram, clarifying its exact purposes for muscle recovery—and showing off his jacked physique at the same time.
“Mr Tom Holland, you see this?” He said. “Power Plate Pulse, this is a massage tool, for muscle recovery, nothing else.”
