Fans of HBO Max’s satirical comedy The Righteous Gemstones will be familiar with the God Squad, the group of jacked, devout evangelical Christians who perform feats of strength to live congregations, led by Kelvin Gemstone (Adam Devine) and his sidekick Keefe Chambers (Tony Cavalero).
Devine trained hard to get into shape for this new storyline, telling Men’s Health that he and Cavalero would train every single day, including biking and HIIT workouts. But it was still humbling to shoot those shirtless scenes next to the God Squad.
“I didn’t take it that seriously,” he said. “It is funnier if Kelvin… it looks like he works out, for sure, but he doesn’t look like Torsten, or any of the guys who are actually in fantastic shape. It’s like Yeah, look at that little guy, he’s trying!.. .They say your body builds in the kitchen, and that is absolutely true. I’m in my mid-to-late 30s now, and the things that I used to be able to do in my early 30s, and my 20s… I could bounce back from a weekend where I just drink beer and eat cheeseburgers, and then by Tuesday, I’m like Oh, I look great, I look just like myself.“
If you’re looking to get into biblical shape like those guys, HBO Max has just dropped an official God Squad workout on YouTube. Hosted by Cavalero in character as Keefe, the spoof fitness video includes a series of Old and New Testament-inspired exercises.
First up is the cross breaker. Holding dumbbells at your sides, lift the weights laterally until you are in a Jesus pose. “Now squeeze until you feel the Lord’s blinding light shooting through those boulder shoulders,” says Chambers. “As a bonus, throw in a controlled 180-degree rotation to really crucify those delts.”
The second move is the Corinthian dumbbell row, performed from a “praying position.” Next up is the Baptist barbell curl. “Using a supinated grip, raise that barbell like Jesus on Easter morning,” says Keefe, “and old to achieve that holy, holy pump. 4 sets of 8 and you’ll have the strength to bear any cross that comes your way.”
Finally, there is the weighted alms-giver, a Russian twist variation which targets the core. “Keep this up until the fire in your gut makes you feel like Job had it easy,” says Keefe.
