55 Best Valentine’s Day Movies to Watch in 2022

Valentine’s Day. February 14, 2022. A day where, for the first time since what feels like centuries, couples can reenact (though, wearing masks and practicing caution) the tradition of savoring overpriced restaurants, standing in sticky overly crowded bars/lounges/clubs/dance floors, and, when the boozy night finally ends, having it out loudly and for the entire block to hear, some version of What Are We Now? (Act 1, Scene 1, Quarantine Bae: “I thought we were just chilling.”)

Or you can just stay in like V-Day pros. Put the masks down. Wear some pajamas. Stain your teeth with some wine. And hopefully watch a movie without a 65-minute prelude of What to Watch. Let this story be your 5-minute prelude.

You can go with the staple romantic comedy (rom com), which you probably won’t be watching anyway; think of these movies (You’ve Got Mail, 10 Thinks I Hate About You, Notting Hill) as an active fireplace, or a white noise machine for your neighbors. You can go with something more unconventional (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Her, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), if attention spans allow it—a choice likely for couples celebrating V-Day for the umpteenth time.

If you’re celebrating National Singles Awareness Day instead, remember, being alone on Valentine’s Day isn’t so bad. When you wake up on February 15, you’ll be alone then, too.

Unlike couples, you can spend the night with some really heavy stuff, though. (For the anti-Valentine’s-Day crowd, we recommend such doomed romance gems as: Blue Valentine, Call Me by Your Name, and Marriage Story).

See, it’s an inclusive holiday.

Here are the 55 best Valentine’s Day movies to watch, no matter your status.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine tells a heartbreaking story of a man desperate to forget a bad relationship. As he re-lives the experience through a technology that erases his mind of their time together, he soon regrets having made the choice.

Her (2013)

Sure, Her isn’t a rom-com in the traditional sense, but it’s romantic nonetheless. In a seemingly dystopian future, a professional letter writer (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love with his virtual assistant/AI operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The ending is bittersweet, but damn if this film doesn’t make you rethink the sentience of your Alexa.

It’s absolutely devastating and a true piece of art—which is not something we can say about all these movies.
