Millennials collectively Leonardo DiCaprio-pointed at their televisions last night, as their childhoods walked on stage at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. The Pepsi Halftime Show featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent—in a rap meets r&b meets every memory you hold of 2003 event. Meanwhile, Kanye West watched from the crowd. (He was on stage in spirit.)
And so while the women’s monobob Olympic event which aired after the game—and saw Americans Kaillie Humphries and Elana Meyers Taylor go gold and silver in the sport’s debut—was more exciting than the Super Bowl’s punt exchanges, at least there was a halftime show to talk about.
So let’s talk about it.
Eminem paid homage to Colin Kaepernick by kneeling after his “Lose Yourself” performance, a move that the NFL apparently didn’t want him to do, but later this morning said they knew he would do all along and were now totally okay with, because, actually, they never had a problem with it—sure, okay. Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar delivered maybe the best numbers of the night. Dr. Dre and Snoop bookended the show with some unteachable swag. And 50 Cent recreated his “In Da Club” music video to millions of confused Gen Z viewers who will probably turn singing upside down into a 2022 TikTok challenge.
