‘1883’ Season 2 – Release Date, Cast, Spoilers, More

While we’re not quite done with the first season of 1883—the Duttons, led by John Dutton’s great-grandfather James, are still making their way west from Texas—there are signs already of future episodes cresting along the horizon.

During its investor day this week, ViacomCBS, the media conglomerate which owns Paramount Plus and will soon change its name to “Paramount,” announced that 1883 will be renewed for Season 2, and that new episodes will be coming to the streaming service. The announcement also came alongside news that the company had ordered another Yellowstone prequel series titled 1932, which would continue the story of the Duttons. (Yellowstone and 1883 creator Taylor Sheridan will likely be involved, though it’s unclear to what extent.)

1932 will likely find the Dutton clan already settled in Montana and will feature the story of John Dutton’s grandfather (who is a child in 1883) and his own son, John Dutton’s father. Future episodes of 1883 will likely further connect these two generations, as John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) grandfather first reaches Montana with his father, James (Tim McGraw), and mother, Margaret (Faith Hill).

From Yellowstone’s most recent season, we know that James settles the land, which will become the Yellowstone. Along the way, he encounters tribes of Native Americans, one with which he parleys during a flashback scene dated 1893, when John (John Dutton I.) is an adolescent. The second season of 1883 will probably not occur during its titular year, and we may find the narrative focusing more on an older John. (The current season has mostly taken the perspective of his sister, Elsa.)

Here’s what else we know about the forthcoming 1883 Season 2.

We don’t know much. While there will be new episodes, it’s not yet clear what exact shape the season will take, or if it will even be a full season.

As far as release date, we might expect a similar winter release as Season 1, which could put us around November or December of this year. But that might be optimistic. Best to look to 2023 for this one, partner.
