Author Lee Child Has Surprise Cameo in ‘Reacher’ Season Finale

Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher, based on the first of the long-running Jack Reacher series of novels, is proving popular with fans of the source material, most notably for leading man Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of the famously huge title character. But there’s plenty else in the show for viewers to enjoy, including one particular moment in the season one finale, “Pie.”

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene, Jack walks into a diner and passes a stranger in the doorway. But that’s no extra. It is none other than Jack Reacher’s creator, author Lee Child. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Ritchson explained how the surprise cameo happened.

“So, we were on set together and we were on a set that was perfect for this interaction to happen,” he said. “And I remember asking Don Granger, who has been a partner with Lee for many years on this franchise, if [he] thought Lee would be up for it. I wanted him to be in the scene. And he goes, ‘Yeah, sure! Lemme go ask him.’ And so he goes, ‘Oh, he loved the idea! He’s going to do it.’ And I was like, ‘No way, my hero! My hero is going to be in the scene with me. He wants to do this.’ And our paths do cross. But I want people to find it on their own. It’s one of those Stan Lee moments. But what’s important is that people know that I was absolutely starstruck every take that we had, and I just couldn’t believe it was happening.”

While Child’s appearance in Reacher may have been Ritchson’s idea, it is unlikely that the author took much convincing to take part in the scene; in fact, there is something of a tradition forming of Child appearing in Stan Lee-style cameos in adaptations of his work. He played a uniformed police officer in 2012’s Jack Reacher, which starred Tom Cruise as the eponymous hero, and then showed up again in its 2016 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, as an airport security agent.

It’s possible that Child will continue his guest appearances in future seasons of Reacher; the show has already been renewed for season two, although everybody is remaining tight-lipped about which book they will be adapting next.
