One of the titular characters of Pam & Tommy, Hulu’s new based-on-a-true-story limited series, is a musician: Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan). So it’s not surprising that there’s lots and lots of music featured in the ’90s-set series. What’s more surprising is that the series is filled with era-appropriate music, and so far Mötley Crüe music has been played exactly zero times. Maybe it fits with the show’s general message—that Tommy Lee is a sideshow—but maybe it’s also sending another message that lingers from the show’s very beginning: by 1994, music fans had moved past the hair rock and onto other things.
The show tells the story of how Lee’s mistreatment of a man working on renovating his home named Rand Gauthier (played by Seth Rogen) led to Gauthier burglarizing their house, stealing a safe that contained a home-recorded sex tape of Lee and his wife, model/actress Pamela Anderson (Lily James). Neither Lee nor Gauthier are depicted as a hero in this story, while it’s tragic to see Anderson’s optimism overshadowed by something entering the public eye that she had nothing to do with.
And all the while, the series has musical choices that fit the action on screen. One episode opens with Chicago’s “25 of 6 to 4,” which just gets you right in the mood. Another episode that finds Lee beefing over studio time with Third Eye Blind ends with “Semi-Charmed Life.” An obvious but perfect pick. When Gauthier decides to steal from Lee, he says “I am karma, and I’m a bitch,” just as the unforgettable opening to Nine Inch Nails’ signature hit, “Closer,” kicks in. Gauthier’s acts are obviously unacceptable, but that moment really shows you just how badass he felt in his own mind in that moment.
Pam & Tommy is a lot more nuanced than you might expect a show about a trashy leaked/stolen sex tape to be. And part of that is how the musical choices aren’t just good songs, but serve to expand upon what’s happening on screen. So, without further ado, here’s every song you’ve heard so far in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy. Stay tuned, because we’ll keep this list updated with every new episode until the end.
