Julia Garner Says Anna Delvey and Ozark’s Ruth Would Be Friends

In Inventing Anna, Shonda Rhimes’ dramatization of the story of the real-life con artist Anna Delvey, Julia Garner portrays the enigmatic socialite from her ascent through New York’s wealthiest circles to her arrest and sentencing.

In a recent edition of IMDb’s Burning Questions, the actress spoke about her favorite memories from the shoot, mastering that distinctive accent, and even imagined what might happen if Anna Delvey were to meet her other best-known character: Ozark‘s steely young criminal Ruth Langmore.

“I think Ruth and Anna would judge each other in the beginning, because they’re from completely different worlds,” she said. “They would start out not really liking each other, and then by the end of it, maybe they would be best friends. And I think they also like activating people, that’s what they have in common.”

She also revealed what it was like to meet the incarcerated Delvey in person while she was preparing to play her, including the thing about the fake heiress that surprised her the most. “What I didn’t expect… was how bubbly she was at moments, and how likeable she was, and charming she was, and how quickly she can go from light to dark and dark to light in seconds.”

Garner is familiar with finding that intensity in her performances, especially when it comes to portraying Ruth on Ozark. While rehearsing the now-viral scene in which Ruth says “if you want to stop me, you’re going to have to kill me,” she has stated that she drew on a wide range of influences, from Mike Tyson’s infamous ear-biting fight to the paintings of Caravaggio.
