Watch a Doctor Diagnose Every Injury in the ‘Rocky’ Movies

Dr. Mike Varshavski, better known to his 9 million subscribers as Doctor Mike, has pivoted from his medical content recently as he heads down the YouTuber-to-boxer pipeline. As part of his training, he recently sat down and watched all of the Rocky movies—essential viewing for any would-be fighter—and couldn’t help but diagnose the many, many injuries that Sylvester Stallone’s famous underdog sustains throughout the franchise.

He starts out with the now-famous scene where Rocky eats raw eggs before a training session. “I can’t help but think about salmonella falling into his cup right now,” he says. “Because I bet those are not pasteurized in shell eggs. He doesn’t look like he was fancy enough to be buying those.”

Salmonella is not one of the health issues that Rocky faces in the movies, and Mike explains that it can be rare. “But that one time you get it,” he adds, “you’re going to wish you didn’t.” He also criticizes Rocky’s decision to train by punching raw meat with no gloves on, risking a career-ending injury to his knuckles, but praises the core workout going on in a later training montage.

During the climactic fight against Apollo Creed, Mike remarks on Rocky’s broken nose, stating that nasal fractures are an especially common injury in boxing, and then explains how much damage a right-handed body shot can do, inhibiting a fighter’s ability to breathe and rotate. “A shot to the liver will bring you down,” he says.
