You’d think after countless films, television shows (both animated and live-action), daily comic strips, and radio dramas, we’d get tired of a masked crusader, scarred by his parents’ violent death decades ago and content to stay unapologetically emo while fighting crime in Gotham. But if the hype around director Matt Reeves’ new The Batman is any indication, audiences still love the gritty DC superhero after all these years. In fact, it’s already been one of the most anticipated (and possibly one of the best) films of 2022.
Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, and Paul Dano, The Batman is planned to be the start of a new trilogy with the deep-voiced vigilante. Of course, whenever the words “Batman” and “trilogy” go together, fans automatically think of Christopher Nolan’s films with Christian Bale leading the way (along with an unforgettable turn from Heath Ledger as the Joker and Tom Hardy as Bane). Audiences have high expectations for Reeves (Cloverfield, Felicity), and early reviews say he and the rest of The Batman crew have knocked it out of the park.
For anyone curious, The Batman takes inspiration from Batman: Year One, a 1987 comic run which focused less on Bruce Wayne’s origins and more on his transformation from an inexperienced fighter to a justice-seeking hero. Plus, it shines a spotlight on the working relationship (and friendship) between Gordon and Batman. So that means The Batman isn’t tied into the DCEU, and you probably won’t get a Superman or Wonder Woman cameo in this trilogy. But honestly, the story of Batman is more than enough to reel us in. No huge Justice League team up required.
So, where can you see this non-DCEU Batman? The film is set to premiere in theaters on March 4, but is it also available to stream? And if not now, when? We have all those answers, and more, below.
