This Trainer Stays at 10 Percent Bodyfat by Tracking His Steps

Following his own dramatic body transformation, which saw him lean down by more than 100 pounds and build muscle through a combination of the keto diet and intermittent fasting, fitness coach and author Thomas DeLauer now makes instructional YouTube on sustainable fat loss.

Speaking with powerlifter Mark Bell and bodybuilder Nsima Inyang in a recent video, DeLauer explained how he maintains his bodyfat at 10 percent by doing as much as he can to leverage NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) throughout the day. This term relates to any kind of walking or activity which involves movement but isn’t part of a workout.

“It hit me big-time last year when I took the kids to Disneyland,” he said. “After three days at Disneyland, I was like… I’m so lean, what happened!” When he looked back at his step count for that trip, he saw he was averaging 35,000 steps a day while pushing a stroller. “And it didn’t feel like I was doing it,” he said.

He went on to describe the “warped” sense of how many calories are burned in a workout, as the perceived level of exertion is greater than it is when out for a stroll. But for a large number of people, DeLauer believes simply going for a walk is a more effective fat-loss strategy.

“If you’re pissed off because you didn’t burn 500 calories in your workout, guess what, you probably wouldn’t anyway,” he continued. “It’s more about how much you’re moving through the course of the day. So that’s the one thing that I track.”
