Like a growing number of actors, Zac Efron isn’t afraid of physically transforming himself for a movie. This can mean sporting a new look—he grew a moustache for the upcoming factually-based drama The Greatest Beer Run Ever, and who can forget that bizarre barnet and beard combo in The Beach Bum?—but Efron is better known for sculpting his physique while getting ready for a role.
“It’s definitely fun because you get to put everything on the line in terms of your work ethic and seeing how far you can push it,” the actor told People in 2019, comparing his physical preparation for each role to an “Olympic event” before clarifying that he doesn’t believe it is a sustainable approach to fitness: “It’s a finite period of time, but I would not consider that a healthy or normal way to live everyday life.”

Perhaps the most shredded Efron has ever been was back in 2017 when he transformed his body for the Baywatch movie, a process which involved 1,000-set workouts and a highly restrictive diet, and which he has since stated he would probably never do again. “I realized that when I was done with that movie, I don’t ever want to be in that good of shape again,” he said in 2020. “It was so hard.”
However, while he isn’t pushing himself to that extreme any more, he is still in incredible shape, as evidenced by his myriad thirst traps and workout posts on social media.Efron most recently showed off his current lean physique while going for a shirtless run on the beach in Costa Rica, proving that the Baywatch energy is still very much there.
