Elliot Page’s ‘Umbrella Academy’ Character Is Trans in Season 3

Fans of Netflix’s comic book adaptation The Umbrella Academy have been waiting nearly two years for answers since that cliffhanger ending in season two. While they’ll have to wait just a little while longer to find out what’s going on with that Sparrow Academyseason three is coming this summer—one of its stars has just revealed some new information about their character.

Actor Elliot Page has just announced that moving forward, the troubled super-sibling Vanya Hargreeves (also known as “Number Seven” on the show and “The White Violin” in the comics ) will go by the name Viktor.

“Meet Viktor Hargreeves,” Page wrote on Instagram, sharing the first official photo of the character’s new look and confirming that the character will be now depicted on-screen as a transgender man in recognition of his own real-life transition. While Vanya is actually a male given name in Russia, the decision to rename the character to Viktor is likely a way of clearly delineating his new identity.

Page came out as a trans in an emotional open letter on social media in December 2020. “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self,” he wrote, adding. “I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

The character’s emotional arc in The Umbrella Academy has already reflected Page’s own real-life journey in many ways, having fallen in love with a woman and pursued a same-sex relationship during the show’s second season (at which time Page was still publicly identifying as a lesbian).

It is unclear as yet whether Viktor’s transition will form any of the third season’s storyline, or if viewers will simply be reintroduced to him, with some time having passed between the cliffhanger ending of season two’s finale, which saw the Hargreeves siblings arrive in an alternate timeline having averted yet another apocalypse, and the beginning of season three. At this point, the show has diverged so far from the source material written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way that trying to predict future plot points is futile.

The third season of The Umbrella Academy will begin streaming on Netflix on June 22.
