Strongman Rob Kearney Tried to Break CrossFit’s Randy WOD Record

When you’re a regular contender at the World’s Strongest Man competition, not to mention the self-proclaimed “World’s Strongest Gay,” 75 pounds might not seem like a lot of weight. But in a new video on his YouTube channel, strongman Rob Kearney is taking on a different kind of lifting challenge than usual, where 75 pounds will take a physical toll on his endurance: a CrossFit WOD called the “Randy”, consisting of 75 power snatches at 75 pounds, performed as fast as possible.

“It’s pretty light,” he says. “It’s a good one for me, seeing as it’s just one barbell movement, rocking it out for 75 reps. The hardest part’s going to be standing up and going up and down 75 times, the weight’s not really an issue.”

He prepares for the WOD with a short session on the assault bike, followed by a set of activation exercises. “It’s the one time you’ll see me warming up,” says Kearney. “Only because I have to.”

Kearney’s strategy for the Randy is to break the power snatches down into 3 sets of 25 reps. The current record for the fastest time performing the Randy is 2:13, but the strongman is realistic in his expectations, saying that he will be happy if he completes the workout in 3 minutes or under. As it so happens, Kearney ultimately completes the Randy in 2:38.

“I had a plan of doing 3 sets of 25 at the start, but that changed after the first set of 25 when I realized my forearms were getting blown up and the cardio was catching up to me,” he says. “So I did 25, 15, 15, 10, 10… It put me in a good spot, finishing 2:38, pretty happy with it… It was a solid workout.”
