The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Marvel’s Moon Knight.
Marvel Studios may have made an oopsies earlier this week, when it announced in a tweet that fans would soon experience the “series” finale of Moon Knight. The Marvel Studios Twitter team then took down the tweet and retweeted the same message, this time using the word “season” instead of “series”—and, so, in one fell swoop, seemingly resurrecting the franchise like Khonshu reaching out to a bleeding Marc Spector in the Egyptian desert.
“Series,” of course refers to the show itself; a “series finale” would have meant the end of the Moon Knight as a television show. (We’re optimistic, at this point, that Moon Knight will appear somewhere in Marvel’s upcoming slate of films, if only as a surprise secondary character. Oscar Isaac has mentioned, however, that he doesn’t have the “golden handcuffs” that many of his MCU costars do.) “Season finale,” however, implies that the series will return to Disney + for a second season. A typo, perhaps. Or an orchestrated move to leave fans in doubt. Who knows.
After the [whatever-you-want-to-call-it] finale, though, some continuation of the story seems imminent. The season/series ended with Marc/Steven (Oscar Isaac/British-accented Oscar Isaac) waking up back in Marc’s London flat, both now seemingly released from Khonshu’s control. And then there was the post credits scene, which, following tradition at Marvel, refuses to leave loose ends tied. Here we discover that Marc/Steven may be free of Khonshu, but that a third identity both exists (his name is Jake Lockley) and is still Moon Knight—meaning Marc/Steven is/are also still Moon Knight. Meaning Khonshu still controls both. Meaning nothing is fully resolved.
In the scene, Lockley is shown finishing Khonshu’s call for vengeance by shooting a near catatonic Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) in the back of a limousine. Khonshu seems to have been using Jake all along, as Harrow is defeated in Egypt by an identity other than Marc and Steven. (During Marc/Steven’s trip down afterlife memory lane, the pair encountered a sarcophagus with something banging from within. Marc had just discovered Steven in his own sarcophagus. This second sarcophagus teased a third identity not yet released.)
It’s just the sort of plot twist that seems to set up another season. Or not. Who knows. Does anyone know?
Is Moon Knight Getting a Season 2?
Short of the possible Twitter gaffe, Marvel has made no official indication that Moon Knight is returning for season 2.
Both Isaac and Hawke have referred to Moon Knight as a “limited series” in interviews, which would make the series more like WandaVision than Loki (which was given a second season before the first ended).
Director Mohamed Diab, however, appears confident that Moon Knight will return—and not just on the big screen. In an interview with SFX, Diab explained his reasoning.
“I can tell you for a fact, I can see him in the next 10 years, not just the next film. He’s a very interesting character. He’s probably the most interesting character for any actor to play. Oscar is doing a great job. People already like him even from the trailer. I think the show’s going to resonate with people, so I see him staying for a long time.”
It may sound more like a desire than a “fact,” but the audience reaction to the series does appear positive. In a cinematic universe still crowded with familiar faces, Isaac’s Moon Knight is also the most fresh—and hopefully that alone will grant the franchise some staying power.
