Peaky Blinders Season 7 – Will There Be a Peaky Blinders Movie?

Originally, Peaky Blinders was set to run seven seasons, with Tommy Shelby’s final redemption arc taking place in Season 7. “[Season 7] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby—who begins as this nihilistic, looking-out only for his family person—will be redeemed, and he will become good,” creator Steven Knight said back in 2019.

Season 6 ends with a small moment of redemption for Tommy, who rides off in a white horse, foiling the first time we see him, astride a black horse in the opening episode.

Tommy’s redemption, however, is only partially achieved—the final season forcing him into an uncomfortably and seemingly committed alliance with England’s fascist party, the same year that Hitler became Führer of Germany. (Oswald Mosley married Diana Freeman-Mitford in 1936, which makes the timeline on the series somewhat premature; Tommy sees a newspaper clipping of the marriage sometime in 1934.)

While Tommy is able to watch his past life burn as he gallops away, one senses his final act is not yet complete. The Second World War is coming soon, and Churchill will face a growing fascist tide sweeping Europe. Tommy, still a member of parliament, will have to rid himself of one final devil before he can rest: Mosley.

That necessity seems to precipitate more Peaky Blinders. And while there won’t be a Season 7, we’re not yet done with Tommy Shelby.

All indications point to “yes.”

In a panel at the BFI London Film Festival, series creator Steven Knight said that he plans to begin shooting the film in 2023. “I am going to write the feature which will be set in and shot in Birmingham,” Knight said .“And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it.”

By “the end of Peaky Blinders,” Knight means the end of Thomas Shelby and Knight’s own involvement in the franchise. He did say there could be “shows related” (he doesn’t like the term “spin-off”), though they would be under a different direction; Knight prefers to “pass on the baton.” That means shows in the same universe as the original series, but without the main cast.

When Will the Movie Come Out?

It’s too soon to put a date on the release. If filming does commence next year, we’ll likely have to wait another calendar year for the release.

A conservative estimate would put the film sometime in early 2024.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Knight explained where the film will fit into the timeline.

“We’re going to make a film – a feature film – which will move the world on, and then once we’ve moved the world on into the Second World [War], we’ll see where that takes us.”

That means the film will likely take place at least up until 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland. It’s unclear how far into the war events of the film will run. Knight’s final bit about seeing what comes after the war likely alludes to future franchises.

For now, we can expect the film to take place sometime between 1934 and the early 1940s.

Who Will Be in the Peaky Blinders Movie?

While Knight hasn’t officially confirmed Cillian Murphy’s reprising Tommy Shelby, it’s hard to imagine a film without its lead star. If the film features a final showdown between Tommy and Mosley, one can expect Sam Claflin also to return.

Also rumored to be in the cast is Tom Holland, who originally auditioned for the series.
