How Justin Medeiros Is Training to Defend CrossFit Games Title

Following his inaugural victory at the 2021 CrossFit Games, Justin Medeiros is training hard in anticipation of defending his title as the fittest man in the sport—and ostensibly on the planet—for a second year in a row. Now just days out from the 2022 Games, Medeiros has shared a look at his last-minute training routine. And just like that of his fellow champion Tia-Clair Toomey who is currently reigning in the female category and shared her own schedule last week, it’s a packed agenda of the kind of physically intense exercise you’d expect from athletes at the absolute top of their field.

Medeiros starts out with running drills where he focuses on his speed and agility, followed by field work consisting of alternating 15-second sled pushes and 5-meter handstand walks—a session which culminates in Medeiros achieving a PR of 30 yards on the handstand walk.

Then he heads back into the gym for some more standard CrossFit training in the form of a 40-minute EMOM (every minute, on the minute) workout which includes 15 cals on the Echo bike, 5 d-ball cleans, and 17 cals on the rowing machine. After that, he tests his full-body control and stability with an obstacle course in an American Ninja Warrior-style gym.

“I love when people underestimate me,” says Medeiros. “I think that’s the best thing ever, man. Obviously I know what I’m capable of, and people can think what they want… I’m excited for this year… I know I’m fitter than I was last year, and if you thought I was hard to beat last year, it’s gonna be a whole ‘nother thing this year.”
