Nothing’s quite like biting into a hot Egg and Sausage McMuffin at the crack of dawn, but how much would you be willing to dish out for one? How about nearly $2,000? Well, that’s how big a fine an airline passenger in Darwin, Australia, was hit with after being caught egg-handed at the airport.
Food & Wine reports that the unidentified traveler, who was flying to Darwin from Bali, Indonesia, was given an AUD$2,664 ($1,846) infringement notice after a sniffer dog discovered the meal. He had had two Egg and Sausage McMuffins and a ham croissant in his bag, violating the country’s biosecurity rules.
The traveler received not even a crumb of sympathy from Murray Watt, Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, over the debacle.

“This will be the most expensive Maccas meal this passenger ever has, this fine is twice the cost of an airfare to Bali, but I have no sympathy for people who choose to disobey Australia’s strict biosecurity measures, and recent detections show you will be caught,” Watt said in a statement, according to Food & Wine. “Australia is FMD-free [foot-and-mouth disease], and we want it to stay that way.”
Upon being confiscated, the hearty breakfast was to be tested for foot-and-mouth disease and then destroyed.
Zinta, the biosecurity detector dog that discovered the items, is receiving high praise for a job well done. “[I]t’s excellent to see she is already contributing to keeping the country safe,” Watt shared.
