Serious question: Will the fallout of The Slap ever end? Months after Will Smith walked on stage and smacked Chris Rock at the Oscars, we enjoyed a time of relative peace, until mid-July, when Smith slapped us all with a deeply bizarre apology video. Of course, Rock wasn’t totally offline seemingly delivering a subtweet from his comedy tour in response.
And now, we’re starting to hear more responses from the Slap-verse. In a new interview for Entertainment Tonight, Oscars producer Will Packer voiced support for Smith. “I love the fact that he’s being so transparent about his process,” Packer said of the video. “Clearly he is going through his own personal rehabilitation.” After so much of a public outcry against Smith, it’s classy of Packer—who is making the rounds in advance of the Idris Elba-led Beast, which he produced—to root for betterment.
Packer wouldn’t tell the outlet if he’s spoken to Smith or Rock, but he added of the former, “I’m pulling for him. I’m pulling for him to continue his own process, but I think this is for him. He needs to do it… I’m wishing you the best, brother.” Packer’s final point about the infamous night is worth noting—especially from someone who clearly put in work to make sure something like that didn’t happen. “People always talk about [the slap], but I hope that over time people will realize it was an energetic, diverse, history-making Oscars ceremony,” he said. “A lot of energy went into it. I’m very prideful of it.”
