Episode 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us, entitled ‘Long Long Time,’ took a detour away from the show’s primary plot in order to tell a largely self-contained love story about two men who found each other and built a life together after the end of the world. The episode has been lauded by critics and fans for its writing and especially for the central performances by White Lotus star Murray Bartlett, who played Frank, and Nick Offerman, who played Bill.
Bill is first introduced in ‘Long Long Time’ as a grizzled, solitary survivalist, making the casting of Offerman a particularly smart choice, as it evoked shades of his best-known role: Ron Swanson, the taciturn outdoorsman from the sitcom Parks & Recreation.
In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel following the broadcast of the episode, Offerman spoke about how he thinks Ron’s survival skills would stack up against Bill’s, and speculated how he himself would cope in a real-life apocalypse situation.
“I would do OK,” he said. “Bill, I think, would do the best, Ron Swanson do the second best. Ron and I both live in the world, you know, and we have relationships, and that makes you soft. Whereas Bill doesn’t have relationships, so he’s a physicist, he’s an engineer, he’s an inventor. You know, Ron and I are making love with our wives, and we’re smoking meat items on our smokers. So I would do OK.”
Kimmel also remarked that Offerman would be at the top of his list of people to call in the event of a doomsday scenario, and joked that Ryan Seacrest would be second on that list.
“I could build a boat,” replied Offerman. “And Seacrest could holler out where to go from the crow’s nest.”
