Chris Stapleton Fans Are Emotional Over His National Anthem Performance at 2023 Super Bowl

Chris Stapleton is the latest singer to go down in football history.

Before the highly anticipated match between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles officially kicked off at the 2023 Super Bowl, the country singer took centerstage on the football field to belt out his version of the National Anthem. Dressed in his signature attire with dark sunglasses, the Kentucky native played his guitar and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” for athletes and fans at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Chris joins an impressive roster of country singers who have been tapped to perform the historic song in the past, including Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Mickey Guyton, among others. The 2023 Super Bowl pregame lineup also featured appearances by Abbott Elementary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph who performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and R&B Babyface who sang “America the Beautiful.”

Reacting to Chris’ soulful rendition of the National Anthem, fans immediately headed over to Twitter to share their thoughts. Many posted heartfelt messages full of loving and supportive words for him.

“Best star spangled banner ever. God Chris Stapleton you are amazing,” one person wrote. “OK SING IT CHRIS STAPLETON! This is an excellent version of the national anthem,” another added. “Chris Stapleton just won the Super Bowl,” a different fan said.

As folks may know, Chris started off in the country music sphere as a songwriter before he made a memorable appearance with Justin Timberlake at the 2015 Country Music Awards. After the duet played an electrifying medley of Chris’ “Tennessee Whiskey” and Justin’s “Drink You Away,” the country music artist rose to instant fame. Nearly a decade later, Chris has now taken home 16 CMAs wins, eight Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music Awards, plus many more titles.

Speaking with CBS News, the vocalist acknowledged that while he may not fit everyone’s definition of a country crooner, he doesn’t let it determine what he chooses to do next.

“I don’t probably sing like a traditional country singer you know, but, ultimately, I’m me,” he told the outlet in June 2022. “I’m just trying to be the best version of that that I can be.”

Chris added: “And whether that’s playing a song that leans into blues or a song that leans into R&B or a song that leans into really distinctly outlaw country. I love all that music. And I don’t feel limited to playing one type of song.”
