Ah, sports. The sweet taste of victory, the agony of defeat. No matter the game (and
no matter the rules), there’s nothing better than watching two teams play their hearts out. Not much can beat rooting on your favorite athlete and seeing that game-winning home run, touchdown, three-pointer, hole-in-one…you get the idea.
And while attending a game in person is always exciting, sometimes it’s even more fun to watch it all unfold right at home with a classic sports film. Who needs the outdoors when you can enjoy the perks of being inside? Think air conditioning (or heating) and the ability to wear sweats all day long without judgment. (Just kidding, we love being outside, too—but we’ll take any excuse to rewatch these flicks.)
Now, the best sports movies are about more than just games. They’re about what those games represent: playing, losing, growing up … losing while growing up. Fields and courts, rinks and rings, stadiums and billiards halls—all have been fertile grounds for filmmakers to explore the human condition. These incredible sports movies have found the hilarious, the heartbreaking, and the downright inspiring in the games that we play—and they’ve knocked it out of the park.
