Everyone’s got their favorite movies about rock ‘n’ roll. There’s Almost Famous, of course. There’s Spinal Tap. There’s A Star Is Born (choose your favorite version). Personally, I’m partial to both School of Rock and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Let’s put it this way: there are enough rock ‘n’ roll movies to fill a decent listicle. But as far as rock ‘n’ roll shows go, that’s a whole different story—and one that Prime Video’s new series, Daisy Jones & the Six, is here to change.
Based on the hit novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & the Six was loosely inspired by memories from Reid’s youth of the famous infighting of Fleetwood Mac as they made classic albums such as Rumours and Tusk. Her book is extremely readable due to it’s oral history format and complex, interesting characters; Prime Video’s series shifts the format to a music documentary, but the characters remain just as compelling.
In fact, the series thrives on those characters. Riley Keough (real-life music royalty as the granddaughter of Elvis Presley) has been one of the best actresses in the industry for years now (with roles in movies like Mad Max: Fury Road, Zola, and previous TV experience in The Girlfriend Experience) and she shines as the titular Daisy Jones (the Stevie Nicks figure in this Fleetwood Mac analogy), while Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games films, Peaky Blinders) is unforgettable as the difficult Billy Dunne (the Lindsey Buckingham to Keough’s Stevie).
The show marks this fictional band’s rise and fall, and with the way the band plays and performs, it’s easy to believe that they could become the biggest band in the world. The songs—some co-written by the likes of Jackson Browne, Marcus Mumford, and Phoebe Bridgers—are irresistible. And when the series is over, you may just go grab yourself a Daisy Jones & the Six t-shirt or vinyl record.
Prime Video is releasing Daisy Jones & the Six in ten episodes, split up by four different Fridays. Below, you can check out exactly when you can see the next chapter in this great fictional band’s story.
