A lot more goes into training core strength than simply shredding your six-pack, and in a new tutorial video on the Buff Dudes channel, bodybuilder Brandon White breaks down what he believes to be one of the best ways to build strength and stability in your core: an isometric exercise called the suitcase carry.
This move can be performed using a dumbbell, kettlebell, or anything else that you can maintain a good grip on and hold to your side without obstructing your own path. The clue’s in the name; if you don’t have any weights to hand, you could simply load up a suitcase or bag.
“If you have this heavy weight, your body’s naturally going to want to lean into that weight… it takes some strength and contraction to pull your spine straight into that aligned position, and that’s what you’re going to want to maintain and hold,” explains White.
In addition to activating the abdominals and obliques to stabilize the spine, you then engage the glutes as well by walking forward in a slow, controlled manner. Keeping control and balance is important here, because you will naturally start to favor one leg. This exercise really works the gluteus minimus as well, White adds, as it is forced to bring the hips back into alignment.
“You really have to focus on going heavy enough,” he continues. “If you go too light, it’s not going to do enough… That’s really the point of it, to test yourself, your stability, your balance, your strength… Start with something you’re comfortable with depending on your strength.”
