A Controversial Marilyn Monroe Biopic Just Received a Rare NC-17 Rating

Ana de Armas’ controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde has been officially rated NC-17 in the US over its explicit sexual content.

The Playlist reports that the Motion Picture Association (MPA) has finally shared its verdict on the movie and has deemed not suitable for younger audiences. The biopic is reportedly Netflix‘s first original film to be given the rare NC-17 rating from the MPA directly.

Over on our side of the pond, the move means it will likely be rated 18.

Directed by Andrew Dominik (Mindhunter, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), Blonde has been in development for years and was originally supposed to come out in 2021.

Blonde is an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, a fictionalised account of Monroe’s rise to fame from when she was still known as Norma Jeane Mortenson to her big breaks.

Knives Out and No Time To Die star de Armas was first tapped to play the iconic actress in 2019 after Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain were both previously linked to the role.

Alongside de Armas, the cast of the upcoming film includes Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, Julianne Nicholson as Marilyn’s mother Gladys Pearl Baker and Caspar Phillipson as John F Kennedy. Xavier Samuel, Sara Paxton and Garret Dillahunt also star.

Speaking about prepping for the role, de Armas said she had a really rough time trying to nail Marilyn’s iconic voice.

“It only took me nine months of dialect coaching, and practicing, and some ADR (automated dialogue replacement) sessions. It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried,” the actress revealed last year while speaking to The Times.

Blonde doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it is expected to stream on Netflix this year.
