Don Saladino is the trainer who has helped actors like Ryan Reynolds and Sebastian Stan get shredded for their super-powered roles as Deadpool and the Winter Soldier. In a new video on his YouTube channel, Saladino shares how he minimizes muscle soreness, demonstrating his warmup and explaining that he follows this simple routine even on rest days.
“I think at the very least, I’ll spend three to five minutes just on the foam roller, every single day,” he says. “It goes a long way.”
While he is a fan of massage guns, Saladino acknowledges that they can be cost-prohibitive, and suggests opting for a foam roller as a more affordable alternative which will still enable you to treat every muscle group. “What I try to tell people is just roll really slowly, and find where that hot spot is,” he says. “If I get on my calf right now and I’m feeling absolutely nothing, then I’ll just move onto the other calf… I might spend a little time, maybe ten back and forths on there.”
Something else Saladino uses to alleviate tightness and soreness in his muscles is a foldable rock mat, which he describes as a “poor man’s massage.” He will simply work the muscles and joints in his feet on this as part of a bottom-up approach. “If our feet are our foundation, are healthy, they move in a certain way, and they’re not sore to the touch, you’re going to be in great shape.”
Finally, Saladino uses a recovery tool called a body wrench, more frequently than not just focusing on the ball component to roll his feet, and explains that the same results can be achieved with just a baseball. (Mobility coach Kelly Starrett similarly deploys a lacrosse ball in lieu of other options.)
“There is no amount of time you need to be spending with this stuff,” he says. “Keep it really short and sweet. Give yourself five minutes before a workout just to foam roll, or maybe it’s four minutes to foam roll and 30 seconds to roll each foot. You start doing that day to day, I guarantee you within a few days your body is just going to be feeling better and moving better.”
