Over the last two years the medical community has identified a wide array of different side effects of Covid-19 that can affect people in addition to the typical symptoms. Some of these present in a large number of patients, such as “long Covid” sufferers who experience extended illness, and other patients under the age of 50 who have found themselves at an increased risk of having a stroke, as well as other, more rare instances such as “Covid tongue.”
There is still so much that scientists don’t fully understand about how the virus interacts with different people’s bodies, but one rare and unfortunate side effect of having coronavirus—shrinkage of the penis—does have a medical explanation.
In a new short video on her channel, urologist and YouTuber Dr. Rena Malik confirms that a connection has been found between contracting Covid and noticing a change in penis size.
“When you get Covid-19, it can affect the linings of the blood vessels,” she explains. “And this can create difficulty in getting blood flow from one part of the body to the other. In fact, this can also affect blood flow getting to the penis. Getting Covid-19 makes you a five-times more higher risk of getting erectile dysfunction.”
She continues that this issue has the potential to then lead to an actual decrease in the size of the penis itself. “When you’re losing blood flow to the area over time, this can cause shrinkage of the tissues itself, meaning that you might notice a decrease in penile length,” she says.
