Behind every great man is a great head of hair. Okay, that’s not really a saying, but it might as well be. Think of your favorite celebrities and chances are most of them have pretty damn good hair. But if we’re going to be really accurate, the saying should go something like this: Behind every great man is a great groomer. And Amy Komorowski is one of the greatest.
Somehow, Komorowski has had her hand in creating the looks for nearly every famous dude you can think of. Remember those Adam Driver Burberry ads? That’s her handiwork. Her client list spans A-listers like Driver, Oscar Isaac, Jeff Bridges, and Eddie Redmayne to up-and-comers like Evan Mock and Thomas Doherty and everyone in between like Andrew Garfield and Joe Jonas. So when it comes to making any man look his very best, her word is basically gospel.
But her philosophy may surprise you. “When it comes down to it, simple is always better,” she says. “You don’t need a complicated regimen. It’s the little things, the details, that make a big transformation.” To her, it’s all about small, easy fixes that work together to upgrade any grooming routine. Whether it’s depuffing your eyes, keeping your beard trimmed, or switching out your hair product, her quick, simple fixes can seriously transform your look. These are the top tricks she uses on her clients and that you can adopt at home for a serious celebrity-level upgrade.
1. Depuff Your Eyes First
“The first thing I do with every client is put an eye mask on them. It’s really something that can improve how you look immediately. When you take them off, you have instant luminosity under the eyes. A full face mask can be a little too much unless you have a lot of time, but the eye mask is important because, with guys, it’s usually under the eyes that need a little love. I put them on right away so they have time to work their magic while I work on their hair. Then if I feel like they need a little more, I’ll use a little roller on top of the mask to massage.”
2. Massage When You Moisturize
“Some guys don’t even moisturize, and that’s the basic first step to great skin. It can make you look less tired and can take off a couple of years, especially in the winter—it nourishes the skin. When you apply it, take a minute to really use your fingers and give yourself a little face massage. Get up onto the forehead, under the eyes, along your jawline and do your neck. It gets the blood flowing to your skin.”

3. Zero In On Shine
“Using a mattifier is an instant way to pull everything together. Foreheads and brow bones can look very prominent on a guy and, especially if a guy has a larger nose, using a mattifier to cut down shine brings more harmony to the face. Apply it to the forehead and nose (the T-zone), maybe along the sides of the nose, and right by the cheeks. Don’t rub it all over your whole face—use it just where you need it to cut down on shine.”
4. Warm Up Your Scalp
“If you’re bald or have a shaved head, keep some self-tanner on hand. Apply it with a mitt all over your head, face and neck. It immediately warms everything up and makes you look healthier.”
5. Wash Appropriately
“Guys with short, uncomplicated hair should wash their hair every day, but if you have curly, textured, long or thick hair, you should wash it every other day or every two days max. If you wash your hair all the time, it will dry out and it can dry out your scalp, too. If you don’t wash your hair every day, the natural oils make it look better.”

6. Keep Your Scalp Clean
“If you have any kind of thinning problems with your hair, you have to be cleaning your scalp to get rid of the oil and residue so your hair can continue to grow out easily. Harklinikken makes one of the best scalp cleaning shampoos out there. It really helps get rid of product buildup that can clog all the pores in your scalp. When you use it, really massage it in to stimulate circulation and blood flow to the scalp.”
7. Lift Your Roots
“Sometimes if my clients just washed their hair, I have to add extra products to make it less puffy. I’ll put in a little bit of salt spray to give it some texture. Then I’ll use R+Co dry shampoo paste when it’s dry to give it lift and volume. It’s not a styling tool—it’s more of a foundational product. Take a tiny bit and rub it between the palms of your hands. Then rub it in at the scalp and lift the hair up as you go to give it volume. Then go in with a paste or pomade for styling.”

8. Enter The Bronze Age
“Guys need a little bit of warmth to their skin. A lot of my clients love the Tom Ford gel bronzer because it looks like a second skin, not like makeup. It can be a bit of a tricky product to use, though. First make sure your skin is well moisturized, then use only a little bit. Make sure you rub it all over. Don’t be afraid—really massage it into your skin. If you want, you can mix it with a little bit of moisturizer to make it easier to apply.”
9. Layer Up When Needed
“The thing with curly hair is that you need to use product that will define and moisturize, but you don’t want to weigh down the curl. It needs to be bouncy and have life to it. That balance is not going to come from one product—it usually involves blending two together. Use a cream to add moisture first—apply it on damp hair, run it through, then scrunch it to create the curl. Then I layer in gel to keep the curl defined. Then you can dry it with a blow dryer using the diffuser attachment or let it air dry.”
10. Diffuse Your Curls
“If you’re going to blow dry curly hair with a diffuser, which helps get super defined curls, use the blow drier for a little bit then take a break to let it air dry while you do something else (like apply your moisturizer). Then go back with the diffuser to finish it. The combination of heating and cooling helps the curls form.”
11. Matte Equals Thicker
“If you have thinning hair or want more volume, never use a pomade. It’s too heavy and will just weigh your hair down. Use a thickening spray on damp hair and then blow dry it—it will give it some oomph. Then style it with only matte products like a matte paste. Matte products will make your hair look thicker.”
12. Spray For Weightless Style
“I think in general, guys don’t use enough spray products. If you use the right spray, you can get volume and texture in thinning hair and you don’t really even need to add anything else. I like the Oribe anti-humidity spray because it’s light and doesn’t leave any residue. It’s not a hairspray—it’s not going to hold your hair in place. It just gives your hair volume and makes it look and feel thicker.”
13. Smooth Out Longer Hair
“If you don’t tame long hair a little bit, it’s just going to look undone. Add a bit of cream to give it a bit of foundation and smooth it out. Work from the middle of the hair to the ends—don’t put it on the roots or it will weigh everything down. Rub the cream over the palm of your hands and then run them from the middle to the ends like you’re twisting your hair. Then you can add a little bit of paste in the same way if you want more control.”
14. Don’t Go Overboard
“The key to using hair product is to always start with just a little bit. You can always add more. Just use a fingertip of product—a dime-sized amount. Rub it in your hands to warm it up and break the product down. You don’t want to be able to see it on your palms. Then run it through your hair. Make sure you get everywhere—the front, sides and back. Especially if you have short hair, you don’t want to just add it to one section. I usually start at the front and work back.”
15. The One Tool Every Guy Needs
“Every guy should own the Philips Norelco OneBlade. It’s my go-to and my clients love it. It makes things so easy: You can go up and down with it, any direction really, and it doesn’t irritate the skin, even if you have sensitive skin. It has a special blade that won’t cut your skin. It’s mistake-proof. You can trim with the attachments, you can edge, you can clean up sideburns, necks, mustaches, beard lines. It can even take off a full beard to almost a clean shave with no irritation. I have so many buzzers but this is the one I use all the time.”
16. Use Natural Light
“All guys should trim their nose and ear hairs at least once every few weeks to keep everything tidy. Step outside your bathroom into natural light—take a mirror and stand by a window—and you’ll see if you need to trim your nose hairs. Natural light reveals everything.”
17. A Little Trimming Goes A Long Way
“The most important thing about beard maintenance is just keeping it trimmed. Get a good trimmer—I like the ones that have a dial to make it really easy—and know your setting. Then trim your beard regularly and use the OneBlade to keep the edges crisp. When the neck hair on a beard starts getting unruly, you just need to tidy it up. Once you handle that, all you need to do is keep it moisturized with beard oil or simple argan oil.”
18. Bust Out The Toothbrush
“One of my biggest tricks is that I use a boar bristle toothbrush as a comb. Sometimes a comb can pull or hurt you, but this doesn’t. I use them to smooth flyaway hairs, sideburns, eyebrows and to brush through mustaches and beards. They’re coarse bristles but gentler on the hair. You can even spray some hairspray on it or put pomade directly on the brush to help tame flyaways for a slicked-back look.”
19. Never Leave Home Without These
“One of the things I give my clients to use after they leave my chair is blotting papers. They’re great at controlling oil and shine and I know they’re not going to leave any chalky or powdery residue on their skin. You can just keep them in your pocket or bag for whenever you need them.”
