Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Son Joseph Baena Shares His Workout

Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, Joseph Baena is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son. But the 24-year-old wasn’t just granted his muscular frame solely on the basis of his patrimony. That physique has been built through countless hours of work in the gym (even if the gym in question does happen to be the place his very famous father helped to make into a Mecca: Gold’s Gym in Venice, California).

Baena came to lifting and bodybuilding after success as a swimmer in high school. He told MH in his extensive cover interview that Arnold gifted him a copy of the seminal text on the topic, The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding (which the Governator co-authored), and the two trained together. Baena called the gift “the biggest help I could ever get.”

“My father really inspires me,” Baena continues. “He kind of created the ideal physique for most people.” Now, it’s not uncommon to see Baena sharing social media posts that evoke some of his father’s most famous poses—with his own spin, of course. But he takes the physical similarities in stride, and even downplays his own impressive gains. “Do I want to have the same physique? I don’t know if I can,” he says with a disarming, self-deprecating laugh.

Once you see Baena work, however, you won’t doubt that he’s committed to building himself into something special. The MH crew caught up with Baena as he worked through a challenging bodybuilding split at Gold’s, filled with high-volume work and dropsets that would fit perfectly into any muscle-building program. After all, he learned from one of the best.
