HBO’s BARRY has always had an extremely unique tone. With a star—and co-creator, and writer, and frequent director—like Bill Hader, comedy is always going to come with the territory. That’s to be expected from the man who started on Saturday Night Live and has since appeared in modern classics like Superbad, Trainwreck, Hot Rod, Adventureland, and so many more. But a very specific brand of dark comedy has always only been part of the equation for Barry, which through the years has managed to feature elements of drama, thriller, and even straight-up action, while always leaving open the possibility of cracking you up at any moment.
Now that the show is coming to an end with Season 4, the show is as dark and willing to go there with any of those subgenres as ever.
“It’s funny, because when the show came out, people were like Wow, this is really dark, and then it just got darker,” Hader said with a laugh when speaking with Men’s Health. “And then I think now… people might think, like, What the hell is this? But I always really liked that.”
After Season 3 ended with—spoiler alert!—Hader’s titular character finally getting caught by the police (with help from Henry Winkler’s Gene Cousineau) during his latest attempted murder, Season 4 opens with Barry once again taking on uncharted waters: prison. And not any prison, but the prison where his former mentor/father figure/sworn enemy Fuches (Stephen Root) happens to be in custody. And that’s not even to mention the continuing stories of rapidly flailing actress/multi-hyphenate Sally (Sarah Goldberg), goofy gangster NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), and, of course, whatever the narcissistic-but-lovable Mr. Cousineau (played as only the legendary Winkler can) finds himself getting into.
Which is all to say: if you’ve been along for the wild Barry ride, you won’t want to miss an episode of the final season. And if you take a peek below, we can be sure that won’t happen.

Each episode of Barry Season 4 will air on HBO on Sunday nights at 10:00 PM EST, and will be available to stream on HBO Max (soon to be known only as Max) at the same time. So that means the next episode will air on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 10:00 EST.
