Get to know Coach Sam!

Sam is a fixture in PUSH511’s morning crew where he coaches group CrossFit and keeps our members laughing, even in the early morning!

When did you start CrossFit? Back when we sat around the radio to listen to the evening news broadcast – 2011.

When did you start coaching at PUSH511? The year the RAVENS WON THE SUPER BOWL – 2013.

What is your fitness background outside of CrossFit? I didn’t grow up with the financial means to play many recreational sports other than playing with myself (aayooo), but I did enjoy punching people and getting punched back so I participated in boxing after high school. Other than that, I’ve always enjoyed exercising for any reason.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family: Let’s see, I’m wildly aggressive, passionately degenerate, questionably gay, incredibly loud, occasionally drunk, curiously foreign, naturally witty, possibly weird, certainly crazy, and definitely dumb.

Tell us something we don’t know about you: I have feelings, I go through a bottle of whipped cream a week (to eat not to wear), I have a long spreadsheet of every movie I’ve seen in theaters since childhood (includes when, where, and with whom), and I’m afraid of poverty more than I am of death.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Dubs, cleans, and fist pumps.

What is your least favorite movement? That ma fa rower and bike.

When do you normally coach? Monday’s, Thursday’s, and Happy Day’s.

Do you prefer working out in the morning, afternoon or evening, and why? Morning. I used to be an evening exercise exhibitionist, but my child support responsibilities meant that I should swap that to mornings to have evenings with them. Now, I’m just used to hating myself before I even have breakfast.

What is your favorite song to work out to? I don’t have a singular song or artist, but I will say that ginger hot boi Ed Sheeran is on the money (said no one).

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym? Confidence that I can outrun immigration services when they find me, maintaining healthy habits, bedroom stamina, getting older without looking like a turkey’s neck, and making some awesome friends!

What do you enjoy most about coaching? From the minor adjustments to the big changes that help all athletes get to that point of happiness. Also, practicing my dance moves for everyone to see.

What’s the next goal you’re looking to achieve as an athlete? Being called an athlete by anyone in my life. Please, just one person for F’s sake, even if it’s my mommy.

What’s the next goal you’re looking to achieve as a coach? Fixing my shoulder to pursue some USAW love.

What’s one thing you’d like to say to all our athletes at PUSH511? Because you’re there for me, I’ll always be there for you.

What tips would you offer someone who is just getting started with CrossFit? Don’t be afraid, always listen, always try your best, and don’t show up in running/tennis shoes.

What’s your favorite place to vacation? I prefer city life vacations (yeah even more than the beach) because I’m a spaz and can’t sit still – so any warm town with good dranks and grub.

If you could have any superpower, what would that superpower be and why? Teleporting because I hate the wasted time, energy, and money of commuting for anything.

If you could only watch one show for the rest of your life, what would it be? Friends – primarily because I’m basic and I don’t have any friends.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? I’d like to be an astronaut so I can explore Uranus.
