‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Trailer Easter Eggs

The Super Bowl LVI commercials included a brand new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the mind-bending new MCU film directed by Sam Raimi. As with all things Marvel, the trailer packs a lot of niche Easter eggs, comic-book references and plot details into just two minutes, which Michael Roman from the Everything Always channel has unpacked in a new video. And as with all things Sam Raimi, it is truly bizarre to behold.

You can watch the full breakdown above for detailed analysis of every minute detail, but here are the cliffnotes:

Wong chastizes Strange for meddling in the multiverse, a reminder of the reality-changing spell he cast at the climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home which basically kicks off the entire plot of this new movie.

The trailer shows at least two variants of Doctor Strange, including “Defender” Strange from the comics, and the evil, power-hungry Dark Strange depicted in the anthology animated series What If…? on Disney+.

Captain Marvel also looks like she might show up here, although the trailer makes it unclear whether this is Carol Danvers, a multiverse variant of Monica Rambeau, or Kamala Khan, who has yet to be introduced as Ms. Marvel.

The trailer gives viewers their first real look at Young Avenger America Chavez and her powers after only using footage of her from the back in the post-credits Far From Home teaser. This time around we get several instances of her portal-creating powers and how they interact with the multiverse and what looks like the mirror dimension from Doctor Strange and Far From Home.

One of the most popular returning characters in Multiverse of Madness is Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, who is shown here clashing with Captain/Ms. Marvel, as well as confronting a variant of herself in a suburban home very similar to the one she created in WandaVision. As Wanda is a Nexus being in the comics, i.e. somebody who remains constant and unchanged across every reality, it will be interesting to see how that particular conversation goes.

Baron Mordo, last seen in the first Doctor Strange movie, also returns and appears to be placing Strange under arrest and bringing him before what fans are assuming to be the Illuminati council. This then leads to perhaps the most important moment of the trailer, when a voice can be heard just off-screen saying: “We should tell him the truth.”

Unless Marvel Studios pull a real switcheroo here, that distinctive voice almost certainly belongs to Patrick Stewart, a.k.a. Charles Xavier from the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies. Whether this is the Professor X we remember from that timeline (he died, but then technically came back in Days of Future Past, maybe?) or a multiverse variant remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain: now that the doors to the Fox universe are open, fans are once again speculating about the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
