A new heavy hitter is entering the boxing ring of wireless headphones. Dyson—yes, Dyson—the brand behind viral vacuums, air purifiers, lights, and hair styling products, is taking its tech to a new category: audio. What type of headphones could come from such a company, you ask? Well, the result is, to put it simply, unexpected.
Dyson announced that it will be launching the new Dyson Zone—a pair of noise-canceling, over-ear air-purifying headphones (really)—in 2022. This new set of high-fidelity headphones is the brand’s first-ever wearable air purifier, circulating purified air to the nose and mouth through a special covering. Think of it this way: The Dyson Zone tackles air and noise pollution.
Given the timing of the news announcement—with April 1 just a couple of days away—it’s easy to assume that this launch is a practical joke from Dyson. However, the brand confirmed with Men’s Health that it is not, in fact, an April Fool’s Day prank.
“The Dyson Zone purifies the air you breathe and move,” Jake Dyson, the brand’s chief engineer, said in a press release. “And unlike face masks, it delivers a plume of fresh air without touching your face, using high-performance filters and two miniaturized air pumps.”
Creating a wearable air purifier isn’t exactly easy. Dyson spent six years developing the Dyson Zone, and in the process—much like its hair tools—played to its strengths. At first glance, it may seem like the headphones and air-purifying visor are two separate parts pieced together, but they actually work hand-in-hand. Air cycles through the compressors in each earcup and then dual-layer filters before becoming two streams of purified air to the nose and mouth, thanks to what Dyson is calling its “non-contact visor.” And that’s just the air-purifying part, which can be set to low, medium, high or auto.
The Dyson Zone uses a neodymium electroacoustic system to create an immersive audio experience and features advanced active noise canceling with three modes (Isolation, Conversation and Transparency), which is essential for any robust listening experience. And don’t worry, you can detach the air-purifying visor any time you want to use the headphones solely for music, podcasts, audiobooks, and anything else you’re listening to.
If you’re looking to breathe the best air while also experiencing quality sound—or maybe you just want to look like someone from the future while listening to your favorite tunes—the Dyson Zone might just be for you—but you won’t be seeing it in Dyson stores or on its website until this fall.
We’ll see if that remains to be the case after April 1.
