Elliot Page has opened up about how gender dysphoria used to affect his body image—and how he is so much happier since undergoing top surgery. The Umbrella Academy star, who publicly came out as a transgender man in 2020, recently shared a shirtless selfie to Instagram in which he proudly shows off his top surgery scars, accompanied by a caption about the joy of feeling more comfortable in his own skin.
“Dysphoria used to be especially rife in the summer,” he wrote. “No layers, just a T-shirt – or layers and oh so sweaty – constantly looking down, readjusting my oversized T. It feels so f’ing good soaking in the sun now, I never thought I could experience this, the joy I feel in my body. I am so grateful for what gender affirming care has allowed me and I look forward to sharing more of my journey soon.”
Page has spoken on multiple occasions about how transitioning has had a hugely positive impact on his mental and physical health, with the top surgery playing a huge role in him no longer feeling a disconnect from his own body.
“I’ve never worked out more in my life,” he said in 2022. “Working out always felt like such a conundrum, because it didn’t feel good. I walked and I hiked, but that was it. The experience of being in my body now is so different. I’m absolutely hooked. The feeling of being really engaged with it, present, pushing it and getting stronger and gaining weight. It’s thrilling. I feel like a kid doing it.”
Being happy and proud in his own body has also meant that Page feels good about sharing it with the world, and he has become something of a thirst trap maestro in the last two years, flaunting his lean physique and cut abs in a series of shirtless selfies.
