Action star Frank Grillo has just announced he will be appearing in the newly rebooted DC universe of interconnected movies overseen by director James Gunn. While the actor remains tight-lipped when it came to details of which DC Comics character he could be playing, he has been only too forthcoming about his previous role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and how that experience influenced his decision to sign on with the rival superhero movie studio.
Grillo played the antagonist Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, in the MCU, most notably in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in which his status as a HYDRA double agent was revealed. He went on to reprise the character in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame—but in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Grillo says he was never fully satisfied with the way Crossbones was depicted, claiming he wasn’t given sufficient screentime to develop the character.
“They never told a story [about Crossbones],” he said. “The mythology of the MCU and just what Marvel has in its pool of characters, it’s so deep. Crossbones was there for a minute, but he was supposed to be there longer, then they went the direction they did.”
“I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very f–king short amount of time, I think there’s more there,” he added. “I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.”
