Three years after Game of Thrones Season 8 concluded with an ending that disappointed most of us and left the future of Westeros in flux, House of the Dragon is ready to fill its place in our collective TV viewing schedules. The show is an ambitious prequel with major hopes to bring back fans of HBO’s biggest series, and maybe even lure in a new audience unfamiliar with its epic IP.
Starring Matt Smith, Milly Alcock, Emmy D’Arcy and many, many others, House of the Dragon follows the Targaryen family (for those unaware, it’s the ruling house of Westeros famous for their dragons). Set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is far enough before Game of Thrones that the stakes can still feel high, and newcomers to the show can meet a whole new cast of characters without fearing they’re missing callbacks or other references to the original show.
House of the Dragon faces an uphill battle to see if viewers are still interested in adaptations of George R. R. Martin’s vast fantasy world, or if one eight-season global phenomenon was enough. HBO is pulling out all the stops, though, and Variety reports the premium cable channel shelled out a budget of somewhere around $20 million per episode (for comparison, Game of Thrones’ first season cost around $6 million per episode). As the first Game of Thrones prequel to see the light of day, if House of the Dragon bombs, it might mean an early death to the other spin-offs in development. There’s a lot on the line here.
