Never thought a human could become a butterfly? Maybe you haven’t been watching enough Peacemaker. Anyway, it’s actually kinda possible when you’re a swimmer fond of the butterfly stroke.
Dan Ginader, D.P.T., better known as Dr. Dan on TikTok is a physical therapy doctor and content creator, and he breaks down in a TikTok video with over 420,000 views how swimmers can actually appear to have “wings” like a butterfly.”
In his video, Dr. Dan stitches another video of a swimmer, @g4bbylizzul, highlighting the expansion of their shoulder blades along the sides of their back stating “I think I grew wings” in a voiceover.
“Swimmers spend a bunch of time with their arms up over their head and to get your arm overhead, your shoulder blade needs to go into upper rotation,” Dr. Dan explains, lifting his arm up to create a similar rotating motion. However, his arm isn’t reaching as high as the swimmer’s.
“Because swimmers do this motion so much, especially against the resistance of the water, their muscles will become very good at pulling that shoulder blade into upper rotation,” he adds, demonstrating a similar motion with his hands, mimicking the up and out motion of the shoulder blades. “So good in fact, the more you do the butterfly stroke, the more likely you are to become a butterfly.”
Okay, you won’t literally become a butterfly, but your shoulder blades can begin to look a bit like wings. Is that a superpower or what?
