Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis was one of the biggest, most talked-about movie releases of 2022, featuring a career-making turn from Austin Butler as the legendary rock star Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, the musician’s infamous former manager, who functions as the movie’s narrator and primary antagonist as he recounts Presley’s rise to fame through his own skewed recollections.
“It is a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz, in his unique artistic way, could have delivered,” Priscilla Presley wrote on social media after a private screening of the film, describing Butler’s performance as her late husband as being “outstanding.”
Presley’s granddaughter, actress Riley Keough, has also praised the film’s depiction of several key events in her family’s history. “In the first five minutes, I could feel how much work Baz and Austin put into trying to get it right,” she told Variety. “That made me emotional immediately. I started crying five minutes in and didn’t stop. There’s a lot of family trauma and generational trauma that started around then for our family. I felt honored they worked so hard to really get his essence, to feel his essence. Austin captured that so beautifully.”

Elvis has been nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards, including nods in the coveted Best Picture and Best Actor categories. This is Butler’s first Oscar nomination, having already won a Golden Globe for his performance in the film.
