One of the best-established types of villains in the horror genre is a possessed or sentient doll, with Chucky and Annabelle among the particularly notable. And while this is, to some degree, a trope, and does often set itself up for humor among its chaos, there will forever be something disturbing about an object meant to ignite children’s joy suddenly coming to life with murderous intent.
And as the Chucky TV show (featuring returning star Devon Sawa) proves, the concept of a serial-killing doll doesn’t have to be all serious. The red-haired killer has evolved into more of a camp figure than actual horror staple, and as the television show leans into that tone, it succeeds in ways that the original couple films in the franchise didn’t. Now 35 years after Child’s Play’s initial premiere in 1988, it feels safe to say that Chucky walked so the exciting new horror movie M3GAN could serve.
Starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, M3GAN follows a toy engineer who her orphaned niece a gift in the form of a a prototype robot doll called M3GAN. The doll follows its prime directive, to take care of her friend and keep her entertained. But as many sci-fi stories with independent AI inevitably do, M3GAN decides to get violent; she literally and figuratively slays. The most memorable part of the film’s trailer is M3GAN dancing while holding a sword, a moment which will likely live on the internet, on loop with an aptly timed pop song, for eternity. For the dance alone, M3GAN is one of our most anticipated horror movies of the year.
