Is the Netflix Show Really Ending?

Never Have I Ever, the raucous high school comedy series about Indian-American teenager Devi and her chaotic coming of age, has been praised by critics and viewers alike for its nuanced and humorous portrayal of life in a Hindu household, and for depicting a realistically diverse—and at times excruciating—high school experience.

The fourth season of the show recently dropped on Netflix, featuring the return of Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, Poorna Jagannathan as her mother Nalini, Darren Barnet as Paxton, Jaren Lewison as Ben, Ramona Young as Eleanor, Lee Rodrigues as Fabiola, Richa Moorjani as Kamala, and of course, in one of the show’s more surreal stylistic flourishes, tennis star John McEnroe as the narrator of Devi’s misadventures.

Will there be a Season 5 of Never Have I Ever?

Never Have I Ever will not be returning for a fifth season, and according to the creative time behind the show, the plan was always to end Devi’s story after four years.

This was both due to the structure of a series set in a high school where each season is mapped onto a school year, and because the cast were inevitably going to age out of their roles (Darren Barnet was 29 when the show began and is now 32.)

“Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense,” series creator Mindy Kaling said in 2022. “They can’t be in high school forever. We’ve seen those shows. Like, you’ve been in high school for 12 years. What is going on here? Also, the actors get older and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old.”

Season 4 of Never Have I Ever is now streaming on Netflix.
