Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 minor spoilers follow.
James Gunn has admitted that he didn’t agree with Star-Lord’s actions in Avengers: Infinity War.
In the Avengers film, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) may have been the catalyst for the Snap when he decided to ambush Thanos (Josh Brolin) as revenge for the Mad Titan sacrificing Gamora at Vormir in order to retrieve the Soul Stone.

His ambush prevented the Avengers from carrying out a plan that may have actually stopped Thanos from wiping out countless lives across the galaxy (although that was all later un-Snapped).
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn acknowledged objecting to Marvel and directors Anthony and Joe Russo’s decision to have Star-Lord ruin the Avengers’ plan out of vengeance.
“They did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted,” he said.
Gunn added that, in his mind, Star-Lord would actually have killed Gamora if she’d asked him to in order to save countless billions across the galaxy.
The filmmaker tries to square his differences with Infinity War in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, during a scene where Star-Lord actually confesses he’d done the wrong thing.
Footage shown ahead of the film’s premiere includes a scene in which Star-Lord explains why the variant Gamora with him now isn’t the same woman he fell in love with.
“[Gamora’s] dad threw her off a magic cliff and she died, and then I lost my temper and nearly destroyed half the universe,” he said.
In Guardians Vol 3, the titular heroes are brought together with this variant of Gamora when Ayeesha of the Sovereign (The Crown‘s Elizabeth Debicki) unleashes the cosmic being Adam Warlock (Black Mirror‘s Will Poulter) to destroy the heroes.
