YOU’D THINK BEING an actor’s son would mean you know your parents’ filmography almost by osmosis. That’s not the case for Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe. The two appear on the April 2023 cover of Men’s Health, where John Owen admits he knows little of his dad’s work.
But how unknowledgeable is he, you ask? Has he seen Bad Influence? No. The West Wing? No. Has he even seen one episode of Parks and Recreation, where Lowe plays one of his most memorable roles to date? No.
“He refused to watch Parks and Rec because I was in it,” Rob says.
One of the films he has seen, though, is Tommy Boy, which stars Chris Farley and David Spade, plus Rob Lowe in an uncredited role. Despite his aversion to watching his father’s films, John Owen declares Tommy Boy a “great movie.” While he avoids Rob Lowe’s filmography though, John Owen isn’t afraid to work with his father.
The father and son co-star in Unstable, a Netflix comedy show about a biotech genius who has to deal with his grief with the help of his son. At the same time, his son is trying to get out of his father’s shadow and make a name for himself. It’s not too different from John Owen’s real life journey to find his own success while being Rob Lowe’s son. In fact, Rob Lowe is earnest about the comparison. The show’s lead actors are able to give honest performances because of their real relationship.
“The story of Unstable is also the story of us!” John Owen says. “It’s not just, Oh my dad and I are in a comedy, ha ha.”
